West Berkshire NewsWest Berkshire Council: Council supports Great British Spring Clean

West Berkshire Council is lending its support to this year’s Great British Spring Clean.

Organised by Keep Britain Tidy, the Great British Spring Clean is a national initiative encouraging community groups to become litter heroes, collecting and safely disposing of litter from streets and parks and recycling as much of it as possible.

Over the next month (22 March to 23 April) community groups across the district will be getting together to spring clean their own neighbourhoods. Fourteen of these groups will be borrowing community litter picking kits from West Berkshire Council to enable them to take part in the campaign. Each kit includes a litter picker, pair of gloves, a hi-vis vest and bin bags. Hoops to hold the bin bags open also available for loan. The Council will also collect the rubbish after the event.

There are 50 adult kits and 40 children’s kits available to be loaned to community groups throughout the year. Kits are fully booked for the Great British Spring Clean but more information about the kits and how to book them can be found at www.westberks.gov.uk/communitylitterpick

In the coming weeks the Council will be supporting clean-ups in Thatcham, Mortimer, Cold Ash, Hermitage, Streatley, Greenham, Beech Hill, Bucklebury, Ufton Nervet and Sulhamstead, Pangbourne, Shaw Cum Donnington, Curridge, Holybrook and the Wasing Park Estate. There will be other spring cleans taking place too – to find one near you visit https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/support-our-campaigns/great-british-spring-clean

Speaking about the Great British Spring Clean, Jon Winstanley, West Berkshire Council’s Head of Transport and Countryside, said:

“We’re delighted to be joining groups across West Berkshire in supporting the Great British Spring Clean. The event is always well supported in the district and we’re pleased to be able to help some of the groups taking part by loaning equipment which will make the task that little bit easier.

“In West Berkshire we have some really strong communities who join together to help make their area a better place to live. The Great British Spring Clean is a great example of this and we applaud everyone out litter picking over the next few weeks.”
